The nature sanctuary houses indigenous fish found in the Zambezi River - a reminder that there is also life under the river, with no less than 84 different fish species in the Upper Zambezi.

As well as tigerfish, possibly the most exciting freshwater fish any angler could wish to catch, the area is well known for several species of bream.

Canoe Safaris on the Zambezi River

A Canoeing Safari on the Upper Zambezi River, is a wonderfully relaxing way to enjoy the astonishingly beautiful scenery that lines the river before it takes its plunge over the Victoria Falls.

This part of the river is dotted with many islands of varying size; home to many birds and small animals.
This is the route David Livingstone took on his way in search of the rising clouds of mist. It was in fact along these banks that he remarked “scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in theirflight”

Lower Zambezi River

The Lower Zambezi Canoeing Safari has got to be the ultimate in relaxed excitement, as you canoe through the section of the Zambezi flanked by National Parks on both sides.
Sit back in your comfortable two man canoe and let the river take you along its current. Your armed River Guide will take you down remote channels between the islands in this magnificently diverse and abundant River, where your opportunities to get close to game are very high.
Hippos are always in sight, elephant, zebra, puku, impala, buffalo, kudu, waterbuck, baboons and crocodiles can be seen browsing on the banks from the laid back comfort of your canoe.
Several operators run 3 – 5 day trips, over-nighting at very quaint and comfortable bush camps on the banks of the river, with great food and white linen beds.
Some operators offer ‘participatory’ canoeing trips of any duration. All gear is carried in the canoes and camps are erected on islands in the river along the way. Everyone gets involved in setting up camp and cooking. These trips are obviously cheaper and a touch less comfortable, but the thrill of the wilderness is that much more intense.

Welcome to Devil's Pool - The natural water hole located on the lip of the Mighty Victoria Falls

Ever heard of the Devil's Pool?

There a fewer ponds in the world that are more scarier than this! The Devil's Pool is a natural pond that is located right on the edge of the Victoria Falls just before over 500 000 cubic metres of water plunge down its 110m on the vertical cliff.

Accessible from the Zambian side, the Devil's Pond is a risky adventure that is preferred by adrenalin junkies who dive and swim right at the lip of the world's famous waterfall.

However, the tourists who have dipped into the Devil's Pool enjoy it a lot. This is confirmed by the review below:

"This was the last "event " of our African trip and what a way to end! I cannot say enough good things about this organization and our experience. First, ones' safety is of the utmost importance to the guides. They love their jobs and want you to have the experience of a lifetime,. Boy did they succeed! It has been 3 weeks and I still feel the rush.

The 3 swims to get to the are doable for a confident swimmer. That is part of the exhilaration. Then you stand above the devil's pool and wonder how in the world you can swim across to the ledge which is extremely close to the edge. The guides are very helpful going and coming across this pool.
Then you can hear the falls, feel the water rushing over you and feel the mist from the falls.
i highly highly recommend this tour." (Courtesy of TripAadvisor)

Below are series of videos showcasing tourists enjoying themselves in Victoria Falls' Devil's Pool

The experience one gets from swimming in the Devil's Pool is truly unforgettable. The danger heightens the excitement. It is literally dicing with death yet no one wants to miss the view of the Victoria Falls from that perch.

The record of fatalities is low. This is because the safety of the tourists is paramount. The guides, though very daring, know the importance of protecting their clients.

Below is an excerpt from the article written by Clive Andrews for UK's Daily Mirror in which he describes his experience in the Devil's Pool:

"I'm perched precariously on a slippery rock jutting out of the Zambezi. Just a few feet in front of me the mighty river cascades over the Victoria Falls, plunging 100 metres into the gorge below.

No matter how many times my guide, Vincent, insists that it's safe to dive in, I just can't see what's going to stop me being swept over the edge and pureed on the jagged rocks at the bottom.

But it's taken me nearly an hour of stumbling over boulders in temperatures of more than 40°C to get to Devil's Pool and I'm not going to give in. So I grit my teeth and take the plunge — after Vincent jumps in first, of course.

The current takes hold immediately, carrying me towards the edge. But, before I can be dragged to a watery grave, I'm stopped by a natural rock wall just beneath the surface. As well as saving my life it allows me to peer over the edge and down into a deafening explosion of rainbow-coloured spray. A truly incredible sight".

The Victoria Falls is the 7th Wonder of Wonder. The spectacular waterfall is the best in the world with over 500 000 cubic litres of water falling over its 110m vertical cliff every minute.

When the water from the Victoria Falls hits the gorges below, it produces a misty cloud and spray. This is why the native Tonga people in the area called it "Mosi-oa-Tunya" (The smoke that thunders).
